About the Fruitfly genome

Assembly and Annotation

fruitfly The data displayed on the Ensembl Fruitfly site is a compendium of data from different sources, including BDGP, FlyBase and DHGP. The genomic sequence is based on BDGP assembly release 5, and annotations displayed in Ensembl are imported from FlyBase release 5.4 (dated 01 November 2007). No additional gene build has been carried out, however blast hits and protein features have been computed through the Ensembl pipeline.

We have included Drosophila into the Ensembl system to allow people to access the Fly genome through the Ensembl user interface (both for visualisation and data mining) and to provide cross-species integration throught our comparative genomics resources (such as homologous gene links and family pages).

The canonical data for Drosophila is managed at FlyBase and we are working in partnership with them to provide feedback on their resources.

General News

  • Canonical Transcripts

Canonical transcripts have been defined for all genes in the core databases.

  • SSAHA
From release 50 we will no longer be providing SSAHA sequence search. If you wish to run your own SSAHA sequence search you can download the files to generate the search hashes from our FTP site.
  • Projections of gene names and GO terms
These have been done as usual, between a variety of species.
  • Stored peptide stats
In order to improve efficiency on ProtView, peptide statistics are now calculated in advance and stored as translation attributes, instead of being calculated on the fly.
  • Translation attributes for initial met and stop
A script has been created and run which assigns translation attributes (value 1/0) depending on whether the translation has an initial methionine, and another depending on whether the transcript has a stop codon.
